Research Activities/niche area

Activities

Niche area of research and significant contributions of the department in research: The department is actively pursuing research on the synthesis and characterization of borate, borosilicate, tellurite, phosphate, bioactive glasses, glass-ceramics, fundamental studies on the glass forming ability of materials, structure of glasses by neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, reverse Monte Carlo simulations and their applications in fluorescent devices, nuclear radiation shielding windows and fast ion conductors in solid state batteries. Research is also being carried out on device-oriented work leading to organic photovoltaics, third generation solar cells, gas sensors, thermochromic and electro-chromic coatings and multi-ferroics and multifunctional perovskite ceramics. The department has extensive research experience in the field of environmental radioactivity distribution in different environment and water quality/air analysis from the radio-toxic elements, in the areas of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh states of India. The theoretical groups in the department are involved in modeling of atomic systems for their applications in quantum optics, quantum computation, atomic clocks and space science. Research is also focused on studying the science behind various complex plasma phenomena occurring in space and astrophysical environments and the nonlinear waves and structures associated with them. Theoretical investigations of nuclear structure and reactions are done. Microscopic approaches based on semi-classical methods are used to study shell effects and the thermodynamics of magic nuclei.
